SUMMARY:LAVERYS.FM • Maribou State - Hallucinating Love
DESCRIPTION:When Maribou State consider the new music they’ve made over the past few years\, one word jumps out: togetherness. Chris Davids and Liam Ivory were propelled onto the world’s stage with their 2015 debut album Portraits\, followed by 2019’s equally acclaimed Kingdom In Colour\, both redefining soulful\, downtempo electronica for a new generation. There’d been world tours\, dates at majestic venues like Sydney Opera House and a roadblock set at Glastonbury\, as well as Artist of the Year accolades and a hugely successful single with Khruangbin (‘Feel Good’). But nothing could have prepared the duo for what happened when they made their third album – the biggest test of their careers yet. \nThe year 2020 was supposed to be a reset\, with time set aside to work on new material. But they soon started spiralling. Chris was facing chronic insomnia and getting to grips with a recent ADHD diagnosis; Liam developed crippling anxiety – and that’s not to mention everything that was going on globally at the time. “There was a massive fallout from us touring the world and then as soon as we finished\, being locked down\,” says Liam. “Our mental health plummeted.” \nThey were feeling the pressure in more ways than one\, and ended up scrapping their first draft. Writing trips were booked in to help jumpstart a new creative flow. Then\, in late 2021\, Chris started experiencing chronic headaches. After one such trip the following spring – where the duo wrote some of their best music yet – he finally received the diagnosis: a rare condition called chiari malformation that causes pressure on the brain. “It was brutal\,” says Chris\, while Liam adds: “It was heartbreaking to see him try and push on in the studio\, sometimes he would keel over from the pain and then try to push on with work again.” \nEventually\, something had to give. Chris underwent surgery in November 2023\, just as their album was coming close to being finished. The experience has brought Maribou State – friends since their teens back in Hertfordshire\, just outside of London – close like never before. That album\, poignantly titled Hallucinating Love\, is imbued with a special warmth\, the kind of rush of being with your friends in a festival field\, hugging them tightly\, and of triumphing over a challenging few years. The pair also made the difficult decision to delay its release\, so that Chris could have the recovery time he needed. There were serious complications with surgery and\, at one point\, concerns that he might not make it. Thankfully he pulled through – and the duo are grateful to their fans for their support. “They’ve been so compassionate and understanding during this time\, it’s been really amazing\,” says Chris. \nHallucinating Love is worth the wait: it’s ambitious\, packed with sublime anthemia\, and is injected with restless energy\, soaring strings and stunning guest vocals from long-standing collaborator Holly Walker and new friends like MOBO-nominated artist Andreya Triana. It evidences Maribou State’s evolving balance of intimacy and intricacy\, as well as their knack for making epic sundown music. Says Liam: “When we were writing\, we were imagining how great it’d feel to finally be back onstage\, bringing people together again.” The overall feeling is one of hope. Hallucinating Love is “about being in a dark place\, a place of struggle\, and then looking forward to bright futures\,” Chris explains. \nThey established new healthier\, more structured ways of working – “involving lots of matcha tea!” quips the latter. “We reframed the way that we approached making music\,” adds Liam. \n“It’s essentially been musical therapy\,” says Chris. “It has just got us to communicate better\, and that has been really powerful.” \nWorking more closely with others also helped to mine musical gold\, at various recording sessions in bucolic settings around the country. Liam and Chris invited along collaborators like incredibly talented producer Jack Sibley and bassist Jonjo Williams\, creating little makeshift communities wherever they went. It infused their music with a new energy. On the album’s lead single ‘Blackoak’\, you can even hear an amateur choir of friends\, recorded in the stairwell of an old country house during one of their stays. \nHallucinating Love has an earthy charm\, echoing the countryside settings of those writing retreats. The woody soul of ‘Blackoak’ is buoyed by beautiful strings and syrupy analogue synth\, or there’s the cabin-folk of ‘Rolling Stone’ and the Celtic marching drums of standout track ‘Peace Talk’\, on which Holly Walker delivers a truly superb vocal performance. She returns on another highlight\, ‘Otherside’\, too – a joyful blast of soul-pop that evokes careening along the coastline in California. The field recordings and samples in their music – for which the duo are known – give their sound a richly layered texture\, like a dusty cassette tape found in the bottom of a glovebox. And here they take it all to the next level: ‘Dance on the World’\, ‘Otherside’\, ‘Peace Talk’ are among their most expansive tunes yet – evidencing just their skill as songwriters. Second single ‘All I Need’ is classic Maribou\, a trick-mirror of melancholy and hope\, with Andreya Triana’s gorgeous vocal cushioned by a propulsive\, glitchy trip-hop beat\, brightly-lit guitar and ghostly omnichord. This being Maribou State\, the songs are evocative and full of gorgeous details – see ‘Bloom’’s guitar line\, unfurling like a flower\, with drum flourishes that gently recall old-skool rave. \nCrucially\, the duo wanted to reflect the lineage of great British electronic music\, from jungle and UK garage to IDM and trance\, and celebrate its influence as well as their place in that history. “We’ve always been very hidden in the project\, and revelled in the ambiguity and anonymity\,” admits Liam. “But as we’ve gotten older\, we’ve wanted to show who we are much more. And naturally it made sense to then point towards British dance music culture because it’s something to be really proud of.” There are some left-turns too you might not expect from the pair\, too. The kosmische groove of Ekos (say it echoes) stands out\, and was the first song that Chris wrote for the album\, sampling his father’s old Eko guitar. “It’s the first time I’d sung on anything of ours that’s been released\,” he says. \nEven during their darkest days\, Maribou State found a way to challenge themselves and push themselves creatively forward. And they’re entering this new phase stronger than ever before – not just as producers but as artists too. “We’re so much more connected as a duo now\,” says Liam. “We’re more grounded and resilient.”

SUMMARY:LAVERYS.FM • Mogwai – The Bad Fire
DESCRIPTION:The arrival of a new Mogwai album – their eleventh – is cause for great celebration. The album’s title\, The Bad Fire\, is a working-class Glaswegian term for Hell. It reflects the difficult time that members of the band were going through. New to the studio was American producer John Congleton\, known for his work with Explosions In The Sky\, Sigur Rós\, John Grant and pretty much everyone in between. Congleton’s work can be heard on the album’s three singles. The album opener “God Gets You Back” sounds like Daft Punk being hunted by My Bloody Valentine\, while “Fanzine Made Of Flesh” sounds like a victory parade for a baby yeti; and “Lion Rumpus” does actually sound like a lion rumpus. The music of Mogwai is a difficult thing to describe\, but an easy thing to experience. At punishing volume\, it can annihilate your body\, leaving you as little more than a head which should by rights fall helplessly to the ground. Yet the music contains an updraft\, a sense of beauty encased in the onslaught. This holds you up\, suspended and empowered\, reminding you that paradise is your birthright. This is especially true of The Bad Fire. It may have been created in dark conditions\, but all that is transcended by the act of four musicians working together here\, now\, in the moment – the only place where Mogwai exist.\ncredits

SUMMARY:LAVERYS.FM • Warmduscher - Too Cold to Hold
DESCRIPTION:Too Cold To Hold is undoubtedly their best and most ambitious album to date. Taking on board the repetitive and polyrhythmic grooves of gqom (an alluring South African take on house music)\, adding in a dash of hip hop flavours and even jazz\, and then harnessing that to their punk-funk\, disco pogo\, it’s a spellbinding mix. The album is produced by the band’s Ben Romans Hopcraft alongside Jamie Neville. \nToo Cold To Hold sees the band stretch out\, open up and produce their most dazzlingly eclectic and honest album to date. One of the many aces in Too Cold To Hold is that not only does it give people what they want\, it also provides what they need. Having come off tour enthused about what the future held for the band. \nGuests include Irvine Welsh\, Lianne La Havas\, Janet Planet\, Jeshi and CouCou Chloe.

SUMMARY:LAVERYS.FM • Primal Scream - Come Ahead
DESCRIPTION:Primal Scream have announced details of ‘Come Ahead’ – their first new album in eight years. \nThe new project will mark the band’s 12th studio album and first full-length LP since 2016’s ‘Chaosmosis’. It’ll contain 11 new tracks\, and is set to see songwriter\, vocalist and frontman Bobby Gillespie deliver some of his most personal and emotionally-open work of his career. \nThe writing process began back in 2022\, and came during a time when Gillespie was unsure if he would make another Primal Scream album again. According to a press release\, the entire LP began with the lyrics\, and marked the first time in a long while where the words came ahead of the music. \n“The story came first. Bobby wrote alone\, using an acoustic guitar. Ideas flowed fast\, in long bursts of inspiration\,” it read. “This process\, in tandem with encouragement from producer David Holmes\, provided a new way in. Working with Holmes and Primal Scream guitarist Andrew Innes\, the Come Ahead sessions were completed between Belfast\, London and Los Angeles.”

SUMMARY:LAVERYS.FM • Pixies - The Night The Zombies Came
DESCRIPTION:‘The Night The Zombies Came is Pixies’ tenth album\, if you count their classic 1987 4AD mini LP Come On Pilgrim\, and first new music since 2022’s acclaimed Doggerel LP. 13 new songs that find Pixies looking ahead to the most cinematic record of their career. \nSongwriter\, vocalist and guitarist Black Francis explains: \n“Fragments that are related and juxtaposed with other fragments in other songs. And in a collection of songs in a so-called LP\, you end up making a kind of movie.” \nDruidism\, apocalyptic shopping malls\, mediaeval themed restaurants\, 12th century poetic form\, surf rock\, gargoyles\, bog people\, and the distinctive dry drum sound of 1970s era Fleetwood Mac are just some of the disparate wonders that inform the new songs. \nFor the new album recording sessions the band returned to work with producer Tom Dalgety\, who drummer David Lovering refers to as “a fifth Pixie” after producing 2016’s Head Carrier\, 2019’s Beneath the Eyrie and 2022’s Doggerel. Early on in the recording process at Guilford Sound studio in Vermont\, the band noticed the new songs were dividing into two camps: what they came to call the “Dust Bowl Songs” – country-tinged\, ballad-esque numbers such as ‘Primrose’ and ‘Mercy Me’\, and on the other side\, the album’s furious punk numbers such as ‘You’re So Impatient’ and ‘Oyster Beds’. Only ‘Jane (The Night the Zombies Came)’ keeps its feet in both camps — reminiscent of early 60s Phil Spector\, the band hitting the sweet spot between mushy and abrasive\, it’s a track that Black Francis allegedly likened to being chased by a swarm of bees. \nThe Night The Zombies Came sessions also saw Pixies welcoming new bass player Emma Richardson (Band Of Skulls) to the line up; the first British band member to join the group. There’s also an expanded role for guitarist Joey Santiago. After contributing his first-ever Pixies lyrics on Doggerel\, for the new record Santiago wrote the words to ‘Hypnotised’ by completing a complex lyrical riddle of sorts\, known as a sestina

SUMMARY:LAVERYS.FM • Goat - Goat
DESCRIPTION:The Ouroboros – the icon of the snake or dragon eating its own tail – appears to some a statement of the brutality of nature. To others of a Gnostic disposition it symbolises the duality of the divine and earthly in mankind. But most commonly\, it’s taken simply to mean the endless cycles of death and rebirth that characterise life on this planet. As such\, it’s an image that looms large in the world of Goat\, the ever-mysterious and endlessly revivifying collective whose latest album marks another adventure above and beyond this particular plane of reality. \nThis may be a band that has named albums both Requiem and Oh Death\, yet this eponymous salvo proves yet again that transcendence and metamorphosis are their watchwords. Following on from the uncharted territory of the soul-searching and folk-tinged Medicine and the dark\, atmospheric soundtrack to Shane Meadows’ The Gallows Pole\, Goat sees this ever-unpredictable outfit summoning rhythmically-driven rituals in unmistakable\, uplifting and scintillating style\, equally adept at igniting dancefloors and expanding minds. \nWhilst this particular mercurial incarnation summons the party dimensions from which we were first introduced to this band well over a decade ago\, it also possesses no shortage of curveballs and curiosity. ‘One More Death’ and ‘Goatbrain’ are spectacular curtain-raisers\, embodying a hedonistic spirit driven by incisive funk and possessed by merciless fuzz/wah-drenched guitar. Yet if these and the filthy\, swaggering groove of ‘Dollar Bill’ mark familiar territory for Goat devotees of old\, ‘Fools Journey’ is just the first of several journeys into the beyond – a blissful drifting meditation infused with free jazz and shamanic overtones which bears the hallmarks of their concurrent project Djinn. \nTrue to the notion of this band effortlessly straddling past\, present and future\, ‘Frisco Beaver’ – another irresistible party-starter powered by insistent guitar filigree and percussion-driven trance-states – is a literal sequel to ‘Disco Fever’ from 2012’s World Music. Yet elsewhere Goat can happily look towards new horizons and come back with some of the most righteous vibrations they’ve yet delivered. The band’s love of hip hop is the fuel for both the rollicking ceremonial throwdown ‘Zombie’ and the end-credits-epic album closer ‘Ouroboros’ which marries infectious chant to breathless Lalo Schifrin-style breakbeat action. And which also means ultimately\, like the titular oldest allegorical symbol in alchemy\, we’re right back where we started. \nAs Brad Dourif’s character Hazel Moates intones in the 1979 movie Wiseblood “Where you come from is gone; where you thought you were going weren’t never there. And where you are ain’t no good unless you can get away from it”; in Goat’s eternal now of renewal and revelation\, there’s never been a more potent means of escape.

SUMMARY:LAVERYS.FM • Leon Bridges - Leon
DESCRIPTION:‘Leon’ has been in the works for a while\, according to Bridges. It was recorded with producer Ian Fitchuk at Mexico’s El Desierto studio\, and with co-producer Daniel Tashian in Nashville. \nIn a statement about the upcoming project\, he said: “’Leon’ has been a long-time coming. I started writing pieces of it as far back as Gold-Diggers Sound. They didn’t fit what I was trying to do with that album and I tried moving on. But I couldn’t shake them because they’re part of me. And\, if I’m honest\, also because I think this is some of my most excellent work yet.” \n“In many ways\, ‘Leon’ has been in the works since my childhood. This record is about simpler days. It’s about time spent in my beloved Fort Worth and the experiences that made me the man I am today. It’s soulful music in the truest sense – it’s imbued with my soul.” \n“I’m excited to share these stories about my home\, about nostalgia\, about my upbringing\, about where I’m from\, with all of you. I hope this music brings you back to your roots and your journey.” \nIt reads: “With ‘Gold-Diggers Sound’\, Bridges has entered a new chapter. Donning the hat of a journeyman\, he holds onto some of the retro characteristics he’s known for while firmly embracing a fresh sound and a new direction – and he might also be teasing a taste of things to come.” \nIn recent years Bridges has been making music with Khruangbin\, including two EPs titled ‘Texas Sun’ and ‘Texas Moon’.

SUMMARY:LAVERYS.FM • Ezra Collective - Dance\, No One’s Watching
DESCRIPTION:‘Dance\, No One’s Watching’ is an ode to the sacred\, yet joyous act of dancing\, an album that musically guides you through a night out in the city\, from the opening of possibilities as a new evening spans out ahead\, to dawn’s final hours as the night comes to a close. \nWritten during a blistering 2023 which saw Ezra Collective tour the world\, and become the first jazz act to win the Mercury Prize\, Dance\, No One’s Watching is a documentation of the many dance floors they encountered. From London to Chicago\, Lagos to Sydney\, dance and rhythm connect us. These songs are a testament to that spirit. \nThe album was recorded at Abbey Road studios\, where the band was surprised by a group of close friends and family\, turning the sessions into a live communal celebration of love\, music\, and dancing. \n‘Dance\, No One’s Watching’ is a record that speaks to the unifying power of dance. Set for release in September 2024\, it is a powerful and distinctive addition to a catalogue that continues to blaze a bold new trail in contemporary British music.

SUMMARY:LAVERYS.FM • Jamie xx - In Waves
DESCRIPTION:Nine years on from the release of his seminal GRAMMY\, BRIT\, Ivor Novello and Mercury Music Prize-nominated debut album In Colour\, London musician\, DJ and producer Jamie xx announces his long-awaited second album In Waves. Across 12 tracks including “Baddy On The Floor”\, his joyous summer collaboration with club culture icon Honey Dijon\, Jamie xx replicates the emotional crescendos and thrilling volatility of an almost mystical night out and features further collaborations with Robyn\, The Avalanches\, Kelsey Lu\, John Glacier and Panda Bear\, Oona Doherty and his The xx bandmates Romy and Oliver Sim. Created over a four year period ushered in by his much-loved 2020 Essential Mix and peppered with periods of self-reflection\, a global pandemic\, the blinking reemergence into the strobelight and a newly discovered love of surfing as escapism\, it’s an album that’s on course to eclipse the heights of its globally acclaimed predecessor. Released on 20th September 2024 via Young.

SUMMARY:LAVERYS.FM • Floating Points - Cascade
DESCRIPTION:Floating Points releases his new album\, Cascade\, out via Ninja Tune. Cascade pushes Floating Points’ sound forward into new places. The eight songs here are allowed to smoulder and spark for up to eight minutes at a time\, allowing for more expansive exploration of sounds and grooves than before. \nA subtle homage to his hometown of Manchester ripples across Cascade. “Afflecks Palace” an enveloping glide of harp melodies overtaken by otherworldly bleeps and beeps\, named after a Mancunian market described as an “emporium of eclecticism.” Elsewhere\, there’s ‘Key 103’\, named after “an underground Manchester radio station a young Sam Shepherd would listen to “religiously”. \nAlmost a decade on since Elaenia\, his revered debut album\, the composer has discovered ways to thread his experiments outside of club music seamlessly into his music designed for the dancefloor.

SUMMARY:LAVERYS.FM • Fred Again… - Ten Days
DESCRIPTION:The concept for Fred Again‘s new album is simple: “My new record is called ten days\,” Fred said in a statement. “It’s ten songs about ten days.” Those 10 songs\, due out Sept. 6\, feature collaborations with Anderson .Paak\, Four Tet\, Skrillex\, Emmylou Harris\, among others. Three tracks from the album\, “adore u” (featuring Obongjayar)\, “ten” (featuring Jozzy and Jim Legxacy)\, and “places to be” (featuring Anderson .Paak and Chika) that have come out over the past year are available to stream now. \nAs simple as it is\, though\, Fred explained the ten days concept further on Instagram: “There’s been a lot of biggg\, mad\, crazy moments in the last year but basically all of these are about really very small quiet intimate moments\,” he wrote. “Some of them are\, like\, the most intensely joyful things I have felt\, and some of them are the other side of things. And some days I don’t want to speak about loads ‘cos I’m not the only person it was an important day for if that makes sense.”
